Alternative Energy Sources – A Brief Glimpse

by Wayne Wargo (PenWay.org)

Attempts to locate the most efficient sustainable alternative energy sources are being seriously pursued in numerous areas in countries across the planet, including most large metropolitan US cities. One significant achievement is the signing of the Kyoto Treaty. The principal aim of this concerned organization of individuals is to lessen the pollutants, including greenhouse gases, that have a negative affect on the designated areas.

Renewable energy sources have proven to be of great help in reducing the quantity of toxins (which are by-products of the use of energy) released into the environment. These renewable energy sources also help to conserve and preserve most of the natural resources that people currently consume as their largest and most convenient energy sources. What are the most popular sources of renewable energy? Here's a list to provide you with some basic understanding about the matter.

1. Solar. This works when the sun's rays are trapped into solar cells. The process turns the heat radiating from the sun into electricity. When the sun's rays hit solar thermal panels, the solar-generated power is then converted to heat air or water. The sun's rays can also connect to parabolic mirrors. This process can produce steam by heating water adjacent to the bent panels. However, you don't need all these scientific processes to have the ability to benefit from solar power. Simply, all you have to do is open the windows and blinds in your rooms to allow the sun to shine in. You'll get an instant heater without having to go through any processes that will require conversion of this energy source.

Presently, the major disadvantage of using this source is its limitations. Obviously, you cannot use it at nighttime or during days when it is raining, or on cloudy or overcast days. Modifications have been invented that allow this type of energy to be used through solar power stations. The current problem is that these are too expensive for home use and there are not many in existence around the globe.

2. Wind. Energy emanating from the wind boosts the blades of wind turbines. When this happens, energy is produced and electricity is manifested through the use of an electrical generator. In the old days, windmills were created so that mechanical machinery could perform the function of physical labor. The performance of windmills, powered by wind, includes the pumping of water and crushing of grains that are essential in agricultural activities such as pumping and farming.

In present times, there are large scale wind farms that produce electrical currents. The end products are then distributed to national electrical grids and small turbines owned by individuals, to distribute wind-generated energy to far-flung agrarian areas and individual homes. There are many advantages to the usage of this kind of power. The principal one, naturally, is that it doesn't generate any by-products that can be harmful to the environment. Another advantage: we will never run out of this source of renewable energy.

3. Geothermal. This comes from the bottom of the earth. In certain regions, holes are being drilled, and the hot rocks that can be found underneath produce steam. This steam is being purified, so that it can be used to drive turbines. The turbines then become power sources for electric generators. To ensure that no harmful by-products will be produced in the process, geothermal plants must be created according to strict specifications. Once the system is set up, it will be self-sufficient in creating energy sources.

4. Hydroelectric. This source of power is being created through dams containing water, that can drive generators and water turbines. Tidal power can also be used if dams are not available. In any case here, the concept is to make use of the kinetic energy of water.

Just by reading through and absorbing the possibilities of the available alternative energy sources, you will doubtless be amazed at how nature can work wonders. Having gained knowledge about the potential of natural alternative energy sources, it is your responsibility to care for everything in the environment around you ,and in so doing, be able to profit, now and in the future, from the benefits each renewable source of energy can provide.
