Kids and Crafts - Teaching Your Children to be Creative with Crafts

by Wayne Wargo (PenWay.org)

Making crafts with children is a very rewarding endeavor and fun for everyone involved. Children can greatly benefit from making crafts and learning to enhance their skills in doing so. Crafting can encourage children to be creative and learn social skills as well.

It is important to consider what crafts you will make with your children. They should be appropriate for their age group and skill level. This is not always easy when you are working with a number of children in a classroom setting or with your own children and they are of multiple skill levels. Some crafts may involve more difficult techniques, but the most important part of crafting is something that you will be able to enjoy with your children.

The most basic craft projects that young children learn are coloring with crayons and markers. This is always something fun to do with children because there are so many educational coloring book pages. Instead of just having the mundane construction paper pictures , you may want to think about encouraging your child to do more complex projects. Maybe teach them how to decoupage or have them make greeting cards. Grandparents love getting birthday cards featuring drawings from their grandchildren!

Upon completion of your projects, you might consider teaching your children about the importance of recycling and how they can recycle other household items. Use newspaper, for example, to do paper mache projects and create candles out of old crayons. You can use the Internt to purchase some craft books to give you plenty of ideas on how you can recycle things like tin cans and tissue boxes. These are items that you would normally throw away anyway so why not make something out of them?

It is important that you do projects that are safe for children. You will want to keep in mind that your child is still developing mentally and physically. You do not want to subject them to harmful chemicals that may make them vulnerable or hurt them. Learn what chemicals to avoid and check labels. This is especially important for paints, glues, and clays. Make sure to watch younger children very carefully, as even non-toxic substances can be harmful if they get into a child's eyes and, in any case, can be difficult to remove from carpets and walls!

Projects can be simple to do and, because you are doing them together, they can be extraordinary and may be useful. Projects don't have to be expensive or difficult. Your children may take a noticeable interest in arts and crafts and even want to take some classes and enhance their skills.
