Acupuncture - Can it Benefit You?
by Wayne Wargo (PenWay.org)
Acupuncture is a treatment the ancient Chinese discovered some three thousand years ago and has been with us since early primitive society. The idea behind acupuncture is that the insertion of needles into certain points of the skin corrects the flow of chi or life force into the body. Needles used in acupuncture are much finer than the ones used for hypodermic injections and the like. Herbal therapies may be combined with acupuncture treatment as well.
Acupuncture is a technique of inserting and manipulating fine filiform needles into specific points on the body to relieve pain or for therapeutic purposes. It is believed the body becomes ill when the body energy flow become unbalanced.
Acupuncture evolved from principles and philosophies unique to oriental thinking and oriental medicine, and is most effectively applied when done in accordance with those principles. Acupuncture is also used, especially in China, as a general anesthetic during childbirth and some types of surgery. Acupuncture is one of the most popular physical therapy alternatives in the world today. This technique is said to cure a number of conditions not easily remedied by modern medicine. Studies in China have shown that acupuncture coupled with physical therapy and herbal treatments greatly enhance the efficacy in stroke recovery rates than just physical therapy alone.
Acupuncture helps in regulating the flow of blood to our reproductive organs and balances hormone levels. This in turn will increase ovarian function in women as well as sperm production in men. It is not a surprise that acupuncture specialists also use their techniques to help women induce labor when they are past their due dates. It is safe, effective, and has no risky side effects.
Acupuncture is an effective treatment for prevention of headaches and migraines and is extremely helpful in dealing with pain and can also be used to treat internal problems as well. This can also increase blood flow and promote healing of infection and disease. It also helps the body release tension thus promoting health wellness.
Acupuncture used on the scalp aims to increase the blood flow to the head, and is supposed to repair damaged cells in both the head and scalp. It is also said to be really good for weight loss, improving energy, relieving lower back and shoulder pain and encouraging a deep sleep.
According to the World Health Organization, neck pain, sciatica, arthritis, depression, knee pain, headache, hypertension, hypotension, stroke, postoperative pain, sprain and tennis elbow are just a few ailments where acupuncture treatments have proven effective.
According to theories of traditional Chinese medicine, the human body has more than 2,000 acupuncture points connected via pathways, or meridians. These pathways create an energy flow (chi, pronounced "chee") through the body that is responsible for overall health.
Acupuncture is covered by many health insurance plans. Check with your insurance carrier or medical professional to determine coverage.
