Jamaica: A Piece of Paradise in the Caribbean
by Wayne Wargo (PenWay.org)
If you want to travel in the Caribbean, you will read about so many wonderful destinations in the islands that it will be difficult to choose just one. One of the most popular places for tourists in the Caribbean is Jamaica, which is an island nation of the Greater Antilles.
Jamaica was formerly a Spanish possession known as Santiago. The island of Jamaica is about 150 miles long and 50 miles wide, so it isn’t huge, but it is a popular destination in the world of tourism, and is actually the third largest island in the Caribbean. It is found less than 100 miles south of Cuba and a little over 100 miles from Hispania, the island on which Haiti and the Dominican Republic are found. It was formerly a possession of Spain. Jamaica gained independence from the United Kingdom and, in 1958, it became a province in the Federation of the West Indies, a federation among the British West Indies. Jamaica attained full independence by leaving the federation in 1962.
Although Jamaica is relatively small, it has had a large cultural influence on the world. Reggae, ska, and dancehall are just a few of the many musical genres that originated in Jamaica. Jungle music in the United Kingdom and hip-hop in the United States are also largely accredited to the Jamaican immigrant population. The Rastafari movement also began in Jamaica.
When visiting Jamaica, you will find that there are an abundant number of fun activities for you to do. Of course, like most other Caribbean islands, Jamaica is home to a number of beautiful beaches, so it is a real island paradise. While there, you can try diving, parasailing, boating, swimming, snorkeling, jet and water skiing, and surfing. Fishing is also very popular in the Jamaica, and you can see a variety of great plants and animals when you are visiting this island.
After a fun day in the sun and water, you should also consider the nightlife in Jamaica. You can dance the night away in a number of clubs and visit the local bars and try some of the local drinks. The restaurants in Jamaica serve many types of food and it is suggested that you always try the cultural cuisine. Shopping is also a must for those tourists who want souvenirs to take home for family, friends and loved ones.
If you plan to go to Jamaica on your next vacation, you can either fly directly there or take a little more time and take a cruise through Caribbean islands. Make sure that you check with your airport to see what kinds of travel paperwork are required to visit Jamaica from your country. Please note that citizens of the United States now require a valid passport for entry into Jamaica. You might want to read up on the many things you can see and do while there.
Jamaica can be your very own island of paradise for the length of your stay. If you want an “off the beaten path” experience, Jamaica invites you to take part in their Meet-the-People program. The Meet-the-People program matches you up with a local Jamaican who shares a similar interest, profession or hobby with you. Your new friend will expose you to local traditions, customs and hidden gems that make Jamaica so special. This is a rare treat for those interested and can find the time to learn more about Jamaica and its customs, traditions, food and more.
