Orlando, Florida - Little-known but Memorable Vacation Activities
by Wayne Wargo (PenWay.org)
For those of you that like the outdoors, Orlando features over 300 lakes, many gardens and parks containing hiking trails as well as wildlife sanctuaries and zoos. The vacation activities are endless.
Orlando, Florida is a fishing estuary, called Mosquito Lagoon that is second to none. This area of central Florida offers both beginners and expert anglers the opportunity to catch record sized redfish, sea trout, snook, tarpon and more. You're sure to see "tailing" redfish, snook hiding in mangroves, rolling tarpon, sea trout, as well as dolphins, manatees and many other animals in their natural environment. Redfish, one of the more popular fish species in the area, and one that most anglers and fishing guides target, are exceptional fighters and can be caught year round. Also known as red drum, these fish can exceed forty or more pounds during the summer months when they gather and spawn. During the winter months, redfish catches normally run in the three to twelve pound range. Fishing guides can catch numerous. redfish per charter, and stories of one hundred redfish per day is not unheard of. The crystal clear, gin like color of the water during the winter makes sight fishing, and finding fish much easier for the trained eye.
Beyond the theme parks Orlando is home to over 150 golf courses, 800 tennis courts, unique restaurants (more than 4,300 restaurants in total), excellent shopping, the Orlando magic basketball team, exciting evening attractions, swaying palm trees, spectacular sunsets, friendly people, great weather, and a relaxed resort atmosphere. There are a total of seven major shopping malls in the area that offer everything from large department stores to the small specialty outlets
Experience the natural beauty of Orlando by deep-sea fishing. Imagine a place where you may take an exhilarating airboat ride across a beautiful lake in the morning and indulge in a calming spa treatment in the afternoon. See Florida from a whole new perspective from the gondola of a hot air balloon. Visit the home to America's space shuttle, the last place on earth for international space station hardware and where probes are sent to space
Visit Gatorland, the alligator capitol of the world and get up close and personal with alligators & crocodiles, birds and bears, parrots and turtles and enjoy the one-of-a-kind show like alligator wrestling. May not be for the faint-hearted.
The public transportation of Orlando is known as the LYNX. It is a public bus system serving the entire Central Florida. A round sign with a pink paw or bus symbol in it marks the bus stops. The standard bus fare is about $1.50 for each person.
There is also another bus system that LYNX offers and this one offers a free ride within Orlando's downtown. It is called the LYMMO.
Furthermore, there are also i-Trolleys which service the International Drive making them mostly geared towards tourists.
