You'll be Sorry if You Don't Visit Upstate New York

by Wayne Wargo (PenWay.org)

Upstate New York is where vacation dreams come true. The Adirondacks and Catskills are a delight for skiing, snowboarding or hiking, while Lake George, Lake Champlain and other wonderful lakes are a pleasure for fishing, boating or family vacations. Or just a peaceful place to sit and think, read a book and hopefully not be interrupted by the ringing of cell phones. Or just relax and enjoy yourself in this part of the beautiful state.

Here are just a few cities worth considering:

Ithaca

Ithaca is an Ivy League town trapped in a state park's body. You'll notice two things when you arrive: Everyone drives a Volvo, and every Volvo has a bumper sticker that reads ITHACA IS GORGES. It's true. The area's streams have been slicing through rock for eons, leaving behind some breathtaking day-hike destinations. Two of the best are Taughannock Falls (a cascade taller than Niagara), and Buttermilk Falls, whose shale-and-sandstone pools are perfect for a refreshing dip.

Saratoga

The Town of Saratoga's history is the history of America. Within the Town of Saratoga lie the villages of Schuylerville and Victory Mills, which both have prominence in the history of the Revolutionary War. The crucial Battle of Saratoga, known as the "Turning Point of the American Revolution," was named one of the 15 most pivotal battles in world history. The Battle is attributed by the heroics of Benedict Arnold and the defeat of British General John Burgoyne.

Buffalo

The City of Buffalo will surprise and delight you with outstanding theater, a world-class symphony, authentic American heritage sites, extraordinary architecture, nightlife, a historic zoo, one of the world's top collections of modern art and charming restaurants. Tour one of Frank Lloyd Wright's many structures, including the Darwin Martin House Complex, Graycliff Estate and Rowing Boathouse. View contemporary art at the renowned Albright-Knox Art Gallery. Catch a Broadway show at the world-famous Shea's Performing Arts Center. Enjoy a sunset along the Erie Canal.

Rochester

The City of Rochester offers plenty of experiences that will leave you relishing and remembering your visit. Families love this city for the museums, shopping, cultural advantages and sporting pleasures that it is home to. Whether you choose to take in a concert at the Eastman School of Music, a play at the Downstairs Cabaret Theatre, you will not be disappointed.

Thousand Islands

The Thousand Islands gave their name to the popular Thousand Island Dressing around the turn of the twentieth century when Sophie LaLonde created the recipe. The actress who popularized the dressing, May Irwin, named Thousand Island dressing for the chain of islands.
